Results of the survey of "America's Best Hospitals" appear in the July 28 issue of the magazine.
UCSF Medical Center ranks seventh overall on the "honor roll" of the nation's leading hospitals. To make the U.S. News honor roll a hospital had to rank among the very best in at least six of 17 specialties.
The survey cites UCSF as one of the top 15 hospitals in AIDS, cancer, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, psychiatry, pulmonary disease, and urology. UCSF also ranks among the hospitals listed as the best in the nation in cardiology, gynecology, and pediatrics.
UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital is ranked as the best hospital in the nation for AIDS care for the seventh consecutive year.
In announcing the results, the magazine stated that any institution listed among the top 42 medical centers in any specialty should be considered a "leading center."
This is the eighth time U.S. News has compiled a list of "America's Best Hospitals."
A total of 1,800 hospitals were evaluated in a survey in which the magazine asked medical experts to name the best hospitals for patient care in each of the 17 specialties. The rankings include the 135 hospitals that earned the highest scores based on reputation and various medical data.
The top 16 overall hospitals in order of honor roll ranking are: (1) Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; (2) Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; (3) Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; (4) Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.; (5) UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles; (6) Cleveland Clinic; (7) UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco; (8) Stanford University Hospital, Stanford, Calif.; (9) Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston; (10) University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor; (10) University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle; (12) Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis; (13) University of Chicago Hospitals; (14) Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; (15) University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City; and (16) Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York.
